Core Concepts of Kosho Ryu

We have been practicing and discussing concepts of Kosho Ryu. Especially how they apply to Kata. Our discussions are meant to challenge us to think differently.
The first of the concepts is moving in an elliptical motion rather that thinking in a circular motion. At first it does not sounds like much of a distinction. However, you may find that by elongating your circles, you will increase your power and flow.
For example, examine a simple Kata such as Pinan Shodan / Taikyoku, Basic Form 1, etc…
Do the first 2 motions in a block style. Step to the left, Low Block. Step and punch.
Now try the same 2 motions in an elliptical fashion. circle your arm towards you first and allow it to flow towards your opponent rather to the side. Allow that motion to pull your body forward into a rising punch rather than a thrust.
Make sure to allow the rest of your body to relax and allow the motion to happen.
Hopefully, you will feel the results!

It's great getting so much more power with the ellipses, I just have to remember to make contact with my opponent slightly BEFORE the ellipse gets to its furthest point, I find that it gives strikes more follow-through and makes manipulations more jarring to the opponent.

By the way, how do you recommend generating power for the rising punch? Is it powered by the hips? the waist? or is it just riding the momentum generated from the previous strike?

Great observation Aaron!
As far as the rising punch is concerned, try using a sequence of motion. Waist then hip then arm. You will find that same power generation. The ellipse will happen in an upward arch.

I like how ellipses have improved locks, throwing and striking. It has made me think of kata differently as well. I like how Aaron showed me that ellipses help with skeletal freezing.
